Lava stones from Indonesia

We have gathered in this section our collection of lava stone objects and statues from Indonesia. Whether sculpted or cast, lava stone remains a fascinating material with varied nuances.
Coming mainly from the Merapi volcano located on the island of Java, the craftsmen who work it show a perfect mastery of stone sculpture.

The lava rock is therefore the result of a volcanic eruption. It can have different colors, gray, black, brown or red.
The last eruption of the Merapi dates back to 2020, but it is necessary to wait several decades before being able to use this lava.
Sculpted lava stone is so hard and solid that it resists frost, on the other hand what is called reconstituted lava stone must be protected against frost.

There is another lava rock technique called JRC. It is a resin mold that acts as a base and a mixture of concrete and lava rock is poured over the resin. The advantage of this technique is that you can create a large sculpture in lava stone, but which is therefore lighter because it is hollow. Also using resin as the base support makes the lava stone sculpture more resistant and allows these stone sculptures to be put outdoors.
